Buying Swiss company addresses: a practical checklist

Before buying a Swiss company address file, ask for a sample drawn from the segment you intend to purchase. Establish what each row represents. A legal entity, a branch and an individual contact serve different purposes, and counting them together can overstate how many target companies the file contains.

What the register gives you

Zefix provides free company lookups, including registered name, office and legal form. An address vendor can charge for assembling and maintaining a selected file. Personal contacts and telephone numbers require additional sources. Ask for the origin and verification date of each field.

A registered address may be a fiduciary’s office. It does not by itself establish where a company operates or where its purchasing team can be reached. Preserve c/o details when importing addresses so that this distinction remains visible.

Inspect ten random records

  • Match the UID and current status against the register. Identify duplicate companies and branches.
  • Check whether the address is a registered office or an evidenced operating location.
  • Read the company website to establish whether its present activity fits your target market.
  • For a named contact, verify the current role and the source of the contact details.

Expand the sample if the list spans materially different sectors or regions. Record the reason each unusable row fails, then compare the cost per usable company in your sample. Agree on replacement terms for incorrect data, update frequency and permitted CRM use before purchasing.

Check the outreach channel

The Swiss Federal Act on Data Protection protects natural persons, so named business contacts can fall within its scope. Electronic advertising also falls under unfair-competition rules. Purchasing a list does not establish recipients’ consent.

The FDPIC’s advertising guidance explains that electronic mass advertising generally requires prior consent, with a limited exception for a business’s own similar offers to customers who have already bought a product or service. Account registration alone is insufficient. Senders must be identifiable and offer a simple, free way to refuse further messages. Telephone advertising must account for unlisted and opted-out numbers; consent or an existing customer relationship can affect the assessment.

Maintain a suppression list for objections. If a vendor claims to supply consented contacts, ask for the consent wording and scope. Establish whether your intended sender, purpose and channel are covered before launching a campaign.

Select companies with evidence

Prospex builds a list from your description of the target market and gives a reason for each company’s inclusion. Unknown fields stay visible. You can inspect the Swiss company directory for initial register checks, then build a target company list and assess the matches against your own requirements.

For an existing list, Prospex Watch presents company changes with their sources. You still need to establish the conditions for contacting each audience through your chosen channel.
